We all rely on the HSE website and it is currently seen as the first port of call when you need to get information about occupational H&S. Users of the forum might be interested to know that the government is planning to, “to streamline, simplify, and reduce the information made available through Government websites”; It will do this by creating a single government website which will replace all “all Department and associated Arms Length Body websites,” including the HSE’s.

Yes as Kate spotted it's www.gov.uk which is the new site. it's not fully operational yet- I was told it as undergoing beta testing and I was not sure if anybody outside the government 'family' had access yet. Personally I think that it is clunky and it will take longer to find relevant information. There is also talk of getting rid of local logo’s and identities. I am not sure if the HSE will disappear into a single HMG identity.

This matter first raised its head last year. There is an article on the SHPonline site about it here: http://www.shponline.co....ut-future-of-hse-website

It sounds like a continuation of the dumbing down process?

Shouldn't really be a problem. Once it's all done and dusted and the information transferred, we can simply save the relevant "sub" page into our favourites (IE, Firefox or whatever), call it what ever we want in our personal browser menu, and carry on regardless. I think we should be more concerned about the on-going dumbing-down and obvious inconsistencies arising from that. I wouldn't be surprised if, having already lost autonomy with the demise of the HSC, the HSE were to lose its logo, and be forced under the HMG DWP banner. Again, not a big deal?

I have just run a test on this new site. Having read the article in SHP about the first –time property developer who was completely ignorant about CDM and ended being fined, I put ‘property developer’ into the search bit- I got a lot off stuff about setting up a business, further down the list there was things about intellectual property rights and stuff but nothing about H&S in general and nothing about CDM. When I put ‘property developer’ into the HSE web search I went straight to a ‘Quick Guide’ about the H&S aspects of property development. So can a general government site deliver the information we need?

From the SHP article: The Cabinet Office spokesperson told SHP that the HSE is not part of the beta project for the single domain and that “there are no plans to migrate HSE content on to the test site”. He added: “The beta development of a single government domain will go live in early 2012. The project will then be assessed and the way forward developed following the results of the beta launch.” Presumably the beta testing isn't concluded, so no point searching for HSE stuff just now.

As always the turkeys are the last to know! The information about this site has only been cascaded to our corner of the government this week.

There is a Health & Safety Section on the beta version:- https://www.gov.uk/brows...ealth-and-safety-at-work https://www.gov.uk/healt...ployers-responsibilities It has a reference to the "HSE website for detailed information on things like taking breaks, toilet facilities and temperatures at work" !

It makes me wonder how long the free HSE ACOP’s /Guidance, will remain free, downloadable or even available. If it ends up like the Direct.gov web site it will provide a lot of information except what you need or want. I’m sure I read somewhere that new guidance would come out via relevant industry bodies /associations, which I’m guessing they will charge for (but can’t remember where I read this sorry).

In my view, it makes sanse to have a single portal as a gateway ( which in any case directgov is), but I cannot see how they will remove the very specialist content on some of the "agency" (arms length-body) websites as that information is not only used by SME's, but others who are experts and need detailed information! eg NICE, CAA, HSE, Environment Agency and so on.
