Hi all,
I have just got a job as site based H&S advisor on a project down London which i really looking foreward to getting started.I would not say i have great EH&S experience (about 5 years) or qualification (NEBOSH gen,IOSH managing,IEMA foundation aswell as other smaller releted courses such as first aid, scaffold inspection, pasma, fire marshall but i would say i have great experience in the construction industry and i think it was this that got me the role as i know how and were the actual workers who at the end of the day are the people doing the hard graft come from as i was a tradesperson myself for 13 years and not from another background or somebody with H&S construction experience but did not come from the roots of the industry.I just thought i put my reasons why i got the job and its not always the people with CMIOSH status who get the work.

Well done my boy - I have the utmost admiration for those from the "trades " that make it. You will have the "hands on" experience that very many other lack.
Just remember your "roots" and the boys will co-operate nicely. Remember to look out for wild arrows headed for your back from the management..
With best wishes.
Jon

I am in the same position as yourself, been working in the roll as safety advisor for three weeks, after a lot of hard work and self financing, I put my credentials on the IOSH web site, and the company contacted me, The computor side was a bit daunting but with some help from my h+s manager overcoming the challenges, one day at a time, Please remember there is a difference between on the tools and on the management team, Live the dream and good luck you have earned, and do some good.

Well done to you. I have been in safety for 22 years now and like you I started on the tools. It has been a great vehicle for me over the years knowing what the 'workers' think and do and it helps to communicate the safety message to them on the same level i.e. same language so to speak. I don't have a degree or anything, all my safety qualifications have been self funded and self motivated over the years and God willing I will have my CMIOSH by the end of the year. It's taken me this long to decide that I want it now.

Congrats fitzy, now the battle begins...
I think you will be surprised how many people in this industry came off the tools, even those with CMIOSH. There will always be room for those with hands-on experience and I personally think it is a big advantage to have worked in industry, regardless of the industry. Now you need to consider your training and qualifications if you aspire to the lofty ranks of senior management.
