Can anyone tell me what is the minimum gap to avoid an in-running nip on a conveyor belt?
I seem to recall, from my distant past, that it was 5mm but I cannot find any documentation to verify this

There are a number of in-running nips on c/vs and a variety of different types of guards.
It is not just about the gap. Consideration is also given to the distance from the trap point.
Try some google searchers on c/v guarding, if you do not find what you want come back

Yes it is 5mm, in accordance with BS EN 620 "Continuous handling equipment and systems. Safety and EMC requirements for fixed belt conveyors for bulk materials".
