Hi having just passed my General Certificate Im wondering where the best place to find entry level jobs? As many state Diploma or Chartered Membership. I have 18 years experience of Facility Management and 5 years Police with an interest in Marine safety or Fire or anything really, based in the North West trying to move to the South West. Thanks

Rob is right, don't worry about NEBOSH dip or CMIOSH. It's experience that counts. And if you're interested in marine then head North not South. Aberdeen is where all the money is. Good luck!

Hi, I got into H&S after I left the forces 4.5 years ago, although my family live in Plymouth I work in Surrey during the week as there is very little work south of Bristol. Although I only have the NEBOSH Construction Certificate and I’m a Tech IOSH, I am a project SHE Manager on a project worth over £30m looking after 17 sites from Scotland to Kent each one has a SHE Advisor managing the day to day SHE stuff and reporting to their area Lead advisor, one North, one South, who then report to my assistant manager who reports to me. Don’t get me wrong I’m not blowing my own trumpet just to make me look good I’m trying to point out that it’s not always about the qualifications it’s also about your previous experiences , attitude with a bit of luck thrown in. All I can say is apply for every job that takes your fancy whether you are qualified or not, you never know they might like what they see in your CV and give you a go, that’s how I got my interview and I managed to sell myself enough to get the job. Good luck getting the job you want.

murray hit it on the head I think A bit of luck and a good interview As an interviewer I look for someone who offers me solutions not just tells me what the problems are and what we should be doing Anyone whom goes in and comes across with a passion for their role and shows a real interest and has done some research for the company goes a long way, even if they don't fit there enthusiasm shines through So results and CV may get you through the door don't waste your opportunity at the interview stage by not putting the effort in or not showing passion for the role As murray says sell yourself and use example of experience and how you overcame them

Totally and utterly agree with Alan and Murray as I stated in an earlier thread I have been successful in obtaining a Consultants role the feed back from the interviewer said that there was another candidate with the same qualifications and experience as me but they completely undersold themselves whereas I was confident about the subject and was able to answer all the questions confidently, the interviewer added I can send you on courses to gain more qualifications but I cant send anyone on a course for "Attitude" you cant teach that, that's why I succeeded.

So the job goes to the guy who can waffle the most/best. Afraid I have seen it quite a few times, whereby people put on a good front and sound good - but in practice give incorrect advice. Guess it looks good in front of the client, helping to secure more work in the world of consultancy. I don't deny you can get both attirbutes in 1 person, but not always.

Thanks everyone your advice is most helpful. It's also good to know, as many of you sound in positions to interview candidates what you look for. I think I need to look at my covering letter and interview from your advice. Sean I may have been that Candidate! Im currently in Manchester I think Aberdeen is a bit to North, but I am seeing a pattern in jobs Midlands/London. As Murrary rightly says a move to Cornwall/Devon would probably mean working in Bristol. Kind Regards Eliza
