Professor Sid Watkins a pioneer of F1 safety has passed away.

Although he was not a safety professional, he chose to supplement his day time job as a neurosurgeon by attending to F1 racing drivers and through necessity (having tended to dying friends) pushed safety improvements through one of the most hard-nose management systems in the world.

His determination and skill led to F1 drivers being able to survive previously fatal crashes - as witnessed by all of us fans over the recent years (Senna (a close friend of Sid's) was the last death in F1, touch wood).

Safety is not the preserve of well-qualified professionals, or time-served practitioners ... it is there for the taking of anyone who cares enough to want to prevent needless suffering.

Rest in peace, Sid, and thanks for the work.

Very well put Tabs, you only have to read the tributes from F1 drivers past and present, to see how high a regards they had for Sid and what he did to protect them.

RIP Sid,
A very sad day for F1 and many other places.
NOT just a H&S man but a very talented medic as I understand and a good friend to many an F1 driver.
A very sad day, which I for one hope to remember.
This man physically saved so many lives it is untrue.
