Anyone give me some advice on testing of RCD's One of the company electricians has informed me we should be testing RCD's in public buildings every three months? Apparently this is to ensure they work effectively between the 5 yearly IEE inspections. I am looking for some literature and some advice to help move it forward. Any advice greatly appreciated

I doubt there is a requirement it is probably risk based others will supply more detail than I can but have you asked him what his source is. Maybe he will say, "dunno" Maybe he will say that it was a bullitin from the Institute of Electrical Engineers refering to the Electrickery at Work Regulations

Manufacturers recommend 3 months. Thats just pressing the test button and resetting it We do our very 3 months How do you know the machanical part of the rcd/rcbo will work when required if the mechanism is stuck. Electrical testing is as per your testing requirements to ensure it trips within the correct time frame Tony

For 30mA units - The three monthly is to test that the mech is working and does NOT prove that the RCD will operate in the correct time i.e. for a BS/EN 61008 and RCBO 61009 300mS (at 30mA and 40mS X5 150mA) For a BS 4293 200mS an 40mS (X5 at 150mA test) Formal testing would be carried out on a electrical condition report PIR as was) More info in Guidance Note 3 IET
