Does anyone have experience working on sites with multiple tower cranes where anti-collision technology has been used? If so, how did it compare to traditional methods of control?
Are there any statistics/studies that demonstrate that where this technology has been used that collision incidents have been reduced?

Hi Winter
I take it that from your post there is a possibility of collisions between cranes. I admit that I am not up on that. However I wonder if you could look at something along the lines of parking sensors that will alert the oprators if the cranes get within a certain distance of each other.

Thanks Mike
There is existing technology out there that I am aware of. My question was more about whether anyone had used it and what they thought of it. If you are interested in knowing a bit more you could look on SMIE's website as one provider I have come across at; http://www.smie.com/uk/pages/frames_support.html

I have had the pleasure of using various systems.
I might be an old cynic but sorry you cannot beat the robust RA where crash radios are used and it is controlled by humans.
Problems encountered with Smie systems.
1. Not synchronised daily.
2. Being cut out by Radio Masts, Taxi Firms Radios, Concrete Pumps and many other electronic wizardry.
3. Biggest problem of all Crane Operator not being trained properly in there use.
There are many varied types as you know and sites must ensure that supplied operators are aware of how to use them.
I was very fortunate in that we only had one TC Operator Supplier who had trainers that ensured operators were trained before using them.

Thanks for your views. Both systems look good provided they dont have an 'off day'.
I must admit I am more used to humans controlling/supervising lifting operations and the three points you highlight could increase the overall risk rather than reduce it.
Other than SMIE what systems did you use, as I think it best to compare all the options?

We only ever used SMIE as we got on well with the company and they were always quick to react when required. They were also quite prepared to come out and explain to the customer that they are only a secondry system and not foolproof.
