Hello, I have recently registered and have found what I have seen thus far extremely helpful.

I am looking to pursue a career in H and S having spent the last 20+ years working firstly as a Defendant personal injury lawyer and then as a liability loss adjuster. I have primarily dealt with employers liability, occupiers liability and public liability matters ranging in value from a few thousand to a million pounds +.

I have now decided however that I would now like to branch out (before I get too old) and have always found the H and S aspect of my work to be interesting. I have recently started the NEBOSH Gen Cert.

I am leaning towards some sort of consultancy role as I am experienced in face to face meetings with clients, having done this for many years.

Any advice or information that could assist in achieving this would be most gratefully received.

I was in a similar position a few years ago, I had a keen interest in health and safety and decided to make a full time career out of it.
You need to plan your progression out carefully, the NEBOSH cert is just the start. Check out job adverts for the role you would eventually like to do. You may find that certain requirements are asked for in a health and safety role. e.g. NEBOSH diploma, Level 5 in Occupational H&S, Chartered membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) etc.
If you are looking for a consultancy role in H&S these qualifications, or ones similar, are desirable.
It can be difficult to get onto the first rung of the H&S job ladder just read some of the comments in the IOSH forum under Careers forum.
So my advice is plan ahead, and if you need any help particularly with regard to chartered membership of IOSH just email them, they can be very helpful.
Networking can be very helpful as well, this can sometimes give you contacts if you wish to pursue a consultancy role. Check out your local branches of IOSH or IIRSM or any other H&S groups and go along to a meeting.

Hiya - as Steve says ideally you'll need a level 6 qualification in safety to progress - that’s what employers in the main look for. That said, you have a great skill set already with the experience you have in your current role - I have no doubt you will already have a great understanding of safety.

Your skills would be a great advantage / asset to a retail safety team for example where they are daily dealing with customers incidents and liabilities………...

I took on a "volunteer" who was in a similar position to you a couple of years ago when working in a LA - he had completed his NEBOSH and was applying for jobs but lacked the direct experience - came in to work with the team for 2/3 days a week for a couple of months and landed a full time paid job with a national organisation. His time with us helped him get relevant experience and a reference.

If you are willing, able to spare the time (and can afford it) it is quite a good way to get into some of the local organisations. In the current climate, I am sure I'm not the only H&S Professional who would welcome some additional support in exchange for providing some practical experience and support!
