I am having a hard time to get tobacco delivery drivers to follow our SSW for the unloading of their vehicles We take the keys from all other drivers and hang them on a hook on the bay door which goes up in the air, thus confirming mainly to the loader/un-loader that the vehicle can't drive off the bay, the problem is, that for some tobacco manufacturers they won't let the driver hand over their keys due to the value of the stock inside etc, even though they are in a secure, and electric fenced depot with a security guard and many of our own staff in attendance. The tobacco companies have suggested giving us a piece of red paper to hang in place of the keys denoting that the driver has rang his depot for them to remotley immobilise that vehicle (that process takes about 5 - 20 mins), but we maintain that that procedure is still open to human or indeed technical errors, where as taking and hanging the keys and the loader/un-loader has had training to say "no keys - no tip". Any thoughts would be appreciated

if the vehicles are artic vehicles then you could get the driver to disconnect the emergency airline, and chock. For rigids you could place a steering wheel lock on the steering wheel, the key is then handed into the guys who unload and placed on your hook on the bay door.

Yes the airline thing was a suggestion of mine as we use a suzi lock for un-coupled trailers so they can't be hooked up and driven off. But I also have the Warehouse management team insisting on a one system fits all as they don't want multiple SSW's, which may confuse some staff (and lets face it risk assessments should be simple un-ambiguous documents). I was wondering perhaps, if there is any known court cases or legislation etc which would stand us in a good negociating position when talking to the tobacco companies and give me some weight behind our requirements

The easiest option is to enable the drivers to give you the keys, and I can't see the tobacco companies aregument really. Who is going to do what with the keys? They think someone is going to steal the vehcile, from a manned, security concious and CCTV'd RDC? As you said, you could just add a section within the SSW that states where the vehcile keys cannot be provided the suzie lock should be attached to the emergency airline and the suzie lock key attached to your bay door hook. Not too difficult to manage, but would require your operatives walking to the trailer and back to attach the suzie lock and return with the key. There are myriad other dock safety solutions, but it's entirely dependant on your process / driver flow etc. and if you have budget for some of the more expensive solutions (wheel chocks, locking bar etc.). Please also bear in mind that its not unkown for a driver to have 2 sets of keys and only up 1 set...

Have a look at Castell we use the Salvo locks for rigids and trailers. Works quite well and we have 70 bays in one warehouse! Its used quite widely across a lot of sites.
