Hi

Can I please ask what medical checks you do - over and above the legal requirements?

I'm aware of the current requirements, vehicle categories, grandfather rights, etc, etc. Our insurers do not require anything additional.

A department has asked the question - why don't we medically check all staff who drive for work - regardless of the vehicle, and whether it's a company or private vehicle; on the basis that the company should make sure they are aware of any conditions which could impair staff's driving ability (and not rely on the staff member to declare it).

The company driving policy requires staff to comply with all legislation, including reporting the specific conditions to DVLA and also to the company. Occi Health pre- and post- employment checks are completed and risk assessments are also in place.

Do any of you do over and above the requirements?

Thanks for your help.

Stephanie

Stephanie,

We have recently introduced vision screening for FLT drivers to check their depth of field and peripheral vision.
We also do hearing tests and all employees are required to undergo random drug and alcohol testing.

There are a number of lifestyle checks on drivers...I introduced carrying out what was the LGV medical every 2 years or sooner as globally (excluding UK) that was where our survey led us. Some countries do it annually..

There were also other requirements like a tiered approach to sleep apnoea checks, cholesterol, drug and alcohol checks etc.

There is a cost to it so a business case needs justification. So we used sickness and absence categories from 2 years worth of data...
