Anyone had experience of dealing with a painter who wishes to grow a beard as it is his right...?

It will be a new face fit test with perhaps the use of a hooded style full respirator.

Being in the asbestos industry it is a nightmare for me with a few of our lads requiring moustaches or goaty beards for "Movember"

Birchall

Only tight-fitting facepieces need to be fit tested; hoods do not.

I've had difficulties face-fitting with designer stubble never mind beards...don't see firefighters with beards these days though, do you?

Hi leadbetter, in the asbestos industry we need to demonstrate that face fitting is carried out. I have only ever had one instance of an Asbestos Analyst, who for religious reasons, had a beard. He wore a hooded respirator.

What do your procedures say and what are you protecting him against? If its in his terms and conditions he is on difficult ground

Had similar issues raised for religious reasons which we resolved with loose fitting RPE but we are a large company and can make reasonable adjustments relatively easily

Firefighters cannot grow beards or other facial hair that impedes upon the effectiveness of the RPE. In their conditions of service. Likewise with head hair that effects use of helmets, chemical suits, hard hats.

Likewise of you can show that you MUST use tight fitting RPE and that nothing else is suitable or would be unreasonable for you to provide to one person then tough on him.(I'm thinking performance levels, training implications, maintenance costs etc)

It may be his 'right' , but he also has responsibilities to cooperate with the employer.
Both parties have to be reasonable, but is it religious grounds (which some people seem to think gives them the right to do what they want.. it doesn't!) or is he just being an awkward ????....

If he doesn't like it... then there are plenty more painters looking for work.
