can anyone advise, is there a minimum requirement for the depth of a workstation for DSE use? I can find lots of guidance on seats, and desk height, but nothing on the depth of the actual desk itself!

thanks

Good question.

A valid answer, one that reflects the research underpinning the DSE regulations, entails taking into account both the variety of tasks to be done at the desk and the upper body and limb measurements of users.

When you think about it, you can appreicate that what the design of the person/desk fit should achieve is appropriate support so that the DSE user is not obliged to adopt harmful postures or stretch repetitively.

If you want some specific references to check up, you're welcome to email me.

The depth of a desk, of course, depends on the sort of monitor used. A few years ago we got rid of our CRT monitors and now use flat screen only, so our desks are smaller and in particular not as deep. Some staff complained and said that we can’t make the desks smaller but when they saw the new desks they realised that this was not an issue.
We use 18 inches (457 mm) as a guide for the minimum distance from the front of the desk to the screen.

BS EN 527-1:2000 gives recommended desk sizes.
