POLL: How many companies are using IOSH WORKING SAFELY
Rank: Super forum user
|
Q1: I have been asked: How wide a requirement there is for non personnel to hold an IOSH WORKING SAFELY passport before they can enter / do any work on a customers site? If the number of responses are of a proportion then several people at our site will need to sit through an e-version of this course (£85 +VAT-ouch!).
Q2: Does anyone know of an e-version of this course that is NOT tied t just one user so it can be rolled out to all new starters and used as a refresher for existing employees.
Over to you and thanks for all responses.

I regret I can't offer numerical data but perhaps these observations may be appropriate
1. Since you don't state the reason for dwelling on the 'IOSH WORKING SAFELY' brand name, may I infer that what you are looking for is standardised training of a reliable standard.
2. If my inference is correct, and your inclusion of the expression 'ouch!' suggests that the budget available to you is modest rather than enormously generous, may I suggest that your most cost-effective approach to achieving the objective postulated in (1) above may be to commission a qualifed safety ergonomist ie. CMIOSH and MIEFH (Or MHFES) to assist you to design, illustrate and produce your own e-learning programme, possibly with the additional assistance of a learning technologist?

Simple reason is to judge how many customers (and potential ones) will be asking for an IOSH Passport (or similar but construction aside). Then the company can assess how many people it needs to send on this course specified by our company. If it is just the one company we've had asking so far then just two or three people will be asked to complete. Judging from the 70 odd viewings and nil responses so far this may be the case. 2. Yes the budget is tight but if we have 100 viewings and no positive replies then the budget won't feel the pinch. But if a sudden rush of say 20 say yes they have a requirement then many more than the initial two will have to sit through the course. Any takers? If your company has a IOSH Passport requirement or similar all I need is a simple yes, thanks. Badger

We don't require contractors have it but they must be able to demonstrate thet their employees have some level of formal safety training.
As a site we have put all our employees and agency workers through either working or managing safely. This is done in house.

All of our clients ( big hitters) all demand a "safety passport" of some sort and several "brands" are accceptable to them. We "walked away" from IOSH after investing considerably in the SPA/IOSH Scheme which IOSH dumped without warning.
We now use CCNSG almost exclusively.
We do however use Managing Safely as the next level up - around 15% of our site workforce hold this.
£85 is cheap!

We have to put EVERYONE through the CCNSG safety passport to get our staff on sites.
Some of our men have CSC cards but some clients have stated that they aren't good enough so we have to put them ALL through it. At about 180 for 2 days.
Depends on what industry you are in I suppose. We work with high voltage electricity so our clients are very stringent about these things.

Yep, many of our clients dallied with CSCS but it was quickly seen to be a scam and now virtualy no one accepts it.

Humbug. Bumkum. Institutional Scam. etc. Look at the depth and complexity of the recommended syllabus within the HSE guidance: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg381.pdfAny suggestion that those exposed to that amount of information over a 1-day event have been "trained" in any shape of form is simply ludicrous (IMHO of course). At least HSE have the good grace to add the following riders within INDG318: Passports are not: ● a way of knowing or identifying that a worker is competent ●a substitute for risk assessment a way of showing ‘approval’ of a contractor ● required or regulated by law ●a reason to ignore giving site-specific information; or ●a substitute for effective on-site management. It's certainly a money spinner. Does it add value and improve health and safety compliance? I think not. The HSE's own commissioned Research Report said as much. End of rant (at least for now).

Ron,
I'd agree.
however if its a requirement of the contract you do it.
IMHO CCNSG comes closest to actually providing some worthwhile training.
NEBOSH Cert is a popular supplement that our junior managers opt for. I find when they return I get less "know all" responses from them & more respect for my profession.
Because of the industry I operate in our folks are truly well H&S trained, certainly our lads on the tools ( Sparks fitters etc) could give lessons to forum posters here.
