We have a work at height policy within my present company and within it covers ladder safety. It covers such things as, locking the ladders up after use, not letting contractors use them or untrained members of staff, pre-use checks etc. But it doesn't require or even mention the requirement for recorded checks. I am at the moment reviewing this document and would like to ask forum users thoughts on this.
Do you recommend recorded checks on ladders, if so how often e.g. every time they are used, or every 6 months etc. What is the legal requirement and were can it be found.

we check and record ours weekly, each ladder is numbered and recorded as checked. all staff have had working at height training and trained to give visual checks before use -

We have a weekly documented check and all users are trained and instructed to undertake a visual (non-documented) pre-use check.
Documenting the check is both useful to ensure compliance (it can be audited) and as a defence if anything goes wrong.
Users should be instructed on how to complete a pre-use check and the obvious defects to look for etc.
Depending on your set up you could also consider including ladders on your statutory inspection (PUWER) testing schedule for an annual inspection. If you’re multi site it’s a good way to monitor the effectiveness of the regular checks.

User checks before each use (WAH trained persons) &;
6 monthly thorough inspection against checklist of entire inventry. (we have 30 odd) label applied certifying check and next due date. Any problems condemn and replace.
This is what I do with Maintenance.

Thanks for the posts everybody, the link from DaisyMaisy was the clincher, I was looking for something to put before my managing director and that convinced him we have to have recorded ladders checks

We have a risk-based system for inspecting ladders. The Class 1 ladders we have which get used outdoors and carried on vehicles are formally inspected every six months, and the EN131 stepladders (used for lighter duties, only ever indoors) are inspected annually.
We use the Scafftag packs. Users also check and report any defects on-use.

Without records how would you show the ladder had been inspected when asked post any accident.

We also use the ScaffTag system, with an inspection being carried out on all ladders/WaH equipment on site on a monthly basis.
Recording of checks is done on the tags, and they are replaced and retained when full.

Hi Steve I've sent you a PM with details of the ladder tag/inspection system that we developed. May be a better option for you than the scafftag version due to the fact that it retains a duplicate copy of all completed checklists for your management records which I think is what you were looking for. Not that I'm promoting Scafftag (other systems are available...!) but the supplied inspection booklet also includes a multi-copy report sheet so we can keep records of previous inspections.
I'm just mentioning that in case the above posters thought there was no record-keeping option.
