Has anyone developed a definition for "reasonable time off"? or know where I can find information on the topic?
Also, what ratio of safety reps to employees / premises?
If you have a response to this can you please identified what industry you in or at least what level of risk the industry is in. Also, the size of your organisation.
Cheers

Used to work in a unionised factory of 600 employees - Union appointed safety reps were given an hour off their normal job to perform a safety inspection of their area once a month.
Hour was to do the inspection and enter into/onto system.
Hope this is what you mean.

Sorry,
Yes to carry out their activities.
1 hour a month - we are currently allowing 1 day every 3 months....the first half of day is for H&S Committe and the second half for inspections / investigations.

Gibbo, it really depends on the business concerned, the rank of the union rep and their area (geographical)

Horses for courses I suppose - You don't say how big your company is - doesn't seem too far off on the face of it though - they have a right (or function) to inspect quarterly and attend safety committee so your about on the money

Also depends on whether you get value from them as a safety resource. No value = minimum "time off" whereas a good TU safety rep may be worth more to the organisation doing safety stuff than their everyday job!
