I am considering updating my 12 year old mobile phone. Can any IOSH colleague advise me as to which of the new fangled products on the market would be suitable for my day to day work in the H&S field. Are there APPS avaliable in respect of H&S info? Many thanks.

Hi Harvey I'm sure this thread will be as long as the proverbial piece of string! Any of the current crop are more than capable, it all depends what you're personal priorities are. Without wanting to advertise, I went for a Razr X, as battery life was quite important to me, and it has a huge capacity compared to most. Didn't want to have to re-charge every day!

I'll stick with my old Nokia - done me proud - only have it to make or receive emergency calls when out and about.
Can't stand the chatter on trains and buses with phones stuck to everyone's lug-hole.
I can see overtime (evolution) babies being born with a mobile phone on the side of their head instead of an ear.

I have a company issued Nokia N8 and the picture quality is second to none, although I find the phone itself a pain in the backside tbh. I would recommend that whatever phone you go for, you get one with a good camera/video option. When a picture paints a thousand words you will be glad you got one that has a high definition.

Harvey, I would avoid Samsungs if you need to synchronise contacts, calendars messages etc. I have a 4 month old Samsung Galaxy Ace. They are average phones (although mine has lost all "Contacts" twice). The real problem is their "Synch" software: Samsung Kies. It is the worst programme that I have ever encountered. I installed this on 3 high Spec' PC's and 2 modern Laptops (one of which is alaso a Samsung) with combinations of Windows 7 and Windows XP (with SP3 and all available updates). On each occassion the programme cannot communicate with the phone. The troubleshooter insists that you reinstall the software again only to achieve the same outcome: 30 minutes wasted. This has happened time after time. I Googled "Samsung Kies problems" and found similar probles on numerous review sites. As soon as my contract finishes I will be getting a different phone. Rant over!
