Now that the threat of annihilation appears to have passed, I too add my best wishes for a great Christmas and a successful 2013, especially to anyone who is job-hunting.

I was going to post this earlier but did not want to waste my time in case the Mayans were right. It looks like they got it wrong so

Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you all - even the grumpy ones!

Yuletide Felicitations! (as the posh wife in BBC TV's "The Good Life!" said during a Christmas episode)

Also, Happy Winter Solstice to everyone, including fellow grumpies and pedants like myself.

Well, better amend that to Happy Summer Solstice for anyone reading this in the Southern Hemisphere. (Does the forum have any users there?)

Perhaps I confused the precise time of the Winter Solstice with that of the Mayan Annihilation by having a semi-celebratory pint (of tea) just after 11.11am. In view of JohnW's advice about the time in Mexico, perhaps my celebration was premature. Oh well, good excuse for another pint later if the Annihilation doesn't occur. :-)

The end of the world has been averted by our business continuity team applying the systems drawn up by the Civil Contingencies Secretariat. All government arks are now on stand down.

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally-conscious, socially-responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter/summer solstice holiday, practised with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practise religious or secular traditions at all.

I also wish you a fiscally-successful, personally-fulfilling and medically-uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that it is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, sex, gender, ethnicity, colour, origin, nationality, age, physical ability, religious faith, marital status or sexual preference of the "wishee".

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting the following terms:
This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the "wisher" to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the "wisher". This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and such warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the "wisher", whichever should happen first.

There was never any threat that the end of the world would be today. It's well known that the Mayan's language has always been difficult to translate. For instance who here can speak Mayanaise? (I prefer it on my leftover turkey) :)

So keep calm and have a great Christmas

While most of us are enjoying a break it's appropriate to spare a thought for those who will be working over the festive period in a very wide variety of roles. This includes those in services which we tend to take for granted plus some which most of us probably don't even envisage. A significant number will be working out of doors in adverse conditions. This includes work on planned projects which need to be completed within fixed 'time windows', e.g. main line railway repair/maintenance schemes. Others who anticipated enjoying a break will instead be called upon to do unscheduled but vital work in response to adverse situations such as flooding and storm damage.
