I just read an interesting article in the "Practitioner" magazine about the OHSCR. It did not make for happy reading. The amount of publicity for this register was underwhelming, and what little there was, appears to be aimed mainly at Safety Professionals. The Federation of Small Businesses (potentially the largest sector which would benefit most from external H&S consultants) did not appear to be aware of the register (hardly their fault).

The "success" of it appears to be measured by the number of Consultants who have handed over money to be included on the register, and not how many Clients are engaging the services of those Consultants.

I saw the article in the online version of SHP that I was emailed yesterday. However, being a luddite, I'll wait until I receive my hard copy before actually reading the article fully.

I seem to remember that a few weeks ago, 'SHPEditor' (if I remember correctly) mentioned that this article was being compiled for this month's edition of SHP, and asked for contributors to the pro's/ con's (of which I think there was at least one willing participant from this forum).

This thread prompts a much wider question about the extent to which OS&H professionals spread the word about OS&H to relevant organisations and other professions

Forum users who are members of IOSH will know that SHP (Safety and Health Practitioner) magazine produced for IOSH regularly includes interesting and useful articles by occupational doctors and lawyers for example. Can anyone comment on the extent, if any, to which IOSH members write for the magazines/journals of business/trade organisations and other professions?

It's a fair point you make. I presume from the lack of responses confirms that not too many members write h&s articles for other professional organisations. Not too surprised either, when I was doing a Construction Diploma some years ago I was surprised that the course only gave a passing mention to CDM Regs and hardly any content on health and safety.

I - and a couple of other members of IOSH who are chartered occupational psychologists - write on safety and health at work for magazines and journals of other professional societies

If you need to know details, it's just a matter of looking up those titles that interest you.

Details of 'the extent' are available from specialist information search organisations for fees.
