we are looking at reviewing our pedestrian access to our main employee car park, the MD has asked if we can use two external escape doors as general in/out doors durning normal working hours?

I personally cant see a problem with this, can anyone tell me different?

Sometimes external escape doors (final fire exits) cannot take the additional wear and tear of continual use as some are designed only to be opened on occasion. So thats something you might want to bear in mind.

BS 5499-4 2000 section 4. states "A door marked as a Fire Exit may also be used during the day-to-day occupation of the premises."

My only concerns would be the suitablilty of the doors, as mentioned by stonecold (although some modern ones are quite robust) and any security issues that may need to be considered.

We did this in my last company and found that we had a sharp increase in the number of reported slips. The reason was that there was an inadequate mat well; it had been perfectly acceptable before, as the normal use for the doors had been for exiting. However when we changed to two way use we should have extended the mat well to cope with the larger numbers of people coming in from the outside - where it could be raining. as soon as they stepped onto the vinyl floor there was a slip risk.
