Hi all,
Does anyone have any experience or risk assessments, for someone with cerabal palsy who will be training/working in the rail industry.
I would be most grateful for any help with this.
Thanks
Clive

Cerebral palsy has a very wide range of potential impairment. As is usually the case, a discussion with the individual will no doubt answer most of the issues.
www.scope.org.uk may be useful reference to you. Note the spelling.

C Can you be more specific as to what the person willl be doing as that would be helpful
Additionally you will need support from others e.g. The individuals helpers, partents, occie health/specialist nurses etc. who are experienced in the health aspects of the situation and the individual themselves noting that at all times the person concerned must be the centre point and be the key decision maker where poss as it can be an unintentional habit by people who work in that specific area to talk over/around the person with CP
Keep your feet on the ground and the exercise should go well as all people can contribute to a work place
Best of luck

Good to see that a postive view is being taken - what can we do to get this person into work as opposed to what obstacles can I put in the way?

Hi All.
Thanks for all of your replies.
Bob, the person is question will be carrying out manual labour tasks in the rail industry, such as moving rail, changing sleepers, shoveling ballast etc. The course he will be on is quite labour intensive, so obviously I need to protect him from any harm, but also as Stuie says, take a positive view to his employment prospects.
I have looked at the Scope website and there is a lot of useful information on there, but I was looking for information/help from someone with first hand experience.
Thanks
Clive

Do you not use pre employment medicals / screening before employment?
Your risk assessment on suitability for the task is key to ensure thet person leaves work in at least the same condition he starts with.
If he can do the work - let him work!

Having direct experience in this area I also work with the individual persons case worker when looking at work placement e.g. risk assessment etc. As in all situations that I have experience of the person involved has had a specialist NHS and/or Social Services or similar specialist case worker in place at some level or another so a 'package' of specialists are there to support a person in a 'work' situation. If I were you I would explore this area and get as many specialist people on board to help

In reply to David H, Yes we do use pre employment medical questionnaires. He failed to disclose his condition on the form, and at interview. We could take the negative view and remove him from the course for that, but we are trying to give him the opportunity to learn new skills and gain employment.
