Lorries about 5% of London road traffic but aobut half of cyclist deaths. On the back of findings that 56% of cycling fatalities in London in 2011 involved large commercial vehicles, TfL commissioned research by the Transport Research Laboratory to look into what could be done to make construction traffic safer for cyclists. Report concludes that most clients and principal contractors do not take ownership of off site road transport risks. 12 recommendations including that injuries arising from collisions connected to building sites should be RIDDOR-reportable (Long been called for but repeatedly not implemented on grounds of existing stats for accidnets associated with occupational road risk, which stats are not very clear). Construction Logistics Plans with safe delivery routes that avoid e.g. schools and narrow streets, and more realistic time slots for deliveries. More work on blind spots on lorries. All TfL and Crossrail contracts now require their vehicles to meet strict safety standards and have cycle specific safety equipment, including side-bars, blind spot mirrors and detection equipment fitted. Some contracts stipulating bicycle training for drivers. Campaigns officer for London Cycling Campaign added that lorries also disproportionately involved in the deaths of pedestrians and motorcyclists. Summary report published last Friday at http://tfl.gov.uk/micros...afety-summary-report.pdf

Regarding cyclists, I'd personally like to see the POLICE do more to prosecute cyclist who flout traffic law and safety on the roads, but it's not going to happen, just needs being said.

Kim you are a 100% correct Peter sorry I would not even read the report as it is money being spent in the wrong way(IMO) We as a company involved in X rail and other major London projects have had to spend thousands fitting cameras ,extra mirrors and signage why? The training missing is to the cyclist who still squash their way in between lorries and buses ride in front of cars and behave like idiots. I was a cyclist and there are plenty of responsible cyclists out there but sadly in my experience not many sensible ones left in London. No amount of cameras or signage on vehicles will stop this mad cyclist culture. Training the cyclist and make them take a test of some sort is where money should be spent. (Rant over) Ta Alex

On the down side - I was told a couple of weeks ago that the Lorry companies involved in Crossrail are complaining that their modified vehicles are uneconomic for non-Crossrail contracts because of all the changes that they have been forced to make to them.

Again correct Alan. Some X Rail sites are going for minimum compliancy and some full compliancy which makes life very difficult. As usual the faceless wonders up above unable to make decisions or who care about the cost to the poor old contractor. Ta Alex

Well, another development. This "poor old contractor" taking the bull by the horns. http://www.bikebiz.com/n...ce-hgv-casualties/015175 Somewhat ironic that I find out about this from a self-employed construction H&S consultant before my employer tells me.

Lets pick on construction yet again A substantial number of cyclists on the London Streets have had no form of training to ride on the public high way. LGV Driver training in the UK is one of the strictest in the EU. Bicycles do not have any formal test certificates. LGV's undergo a strict MOT and are frequently stopped by VOSA for safety checks. LGV's involved in accidents are not all construction vehicles. Like previous threads I wish the Met Police would do more to prosecute cyclists who ignore the high way code. Borris goes on about LGV's, why does he not insist anyone use his bicycles has past some form of test, carries insurance and wears a safety helmet.
