Hi all,
I just wondered if anyone has tried alternative ways of consulting employees as required by H&S(CWE)Regs '96. Ours are spread all over, sometimes abroad, and move around a lot and it's very difficult to call them into the depot to attend a meeting.
I was wondering about online surveys, using email, or if anyone has any other ideas?
Has anyone else tried this kind of approach? What are the pros and cons?

Many thanks
Kay

We have tried weekly conference calls with all the guys as they are located all over the country, Emails are sent out beforehand with agendas this is then followed up with minutes of the meeting being emailed out. Not everyone always rings in if they can find an excuse to dodge it but we get them eventually. The most annoying aspect is the guys ant wait to get finished to continue with their site tasks so very few have little to say.

There are lots of companies where face to face meetings are not practicable. Emails can be used for on-going up dates. Annual reviews can also be used to check for any issues. Also if you can't bring everyone in at the same time then can perhaps quaterly or bi-annual meetings be arranged for smaller groups of employees(perhaps arranged in local areas)?

Do they have any other kinds of meetings to which the topics could be added?

It depends on what you want to consult about, if you are differentiating between communicating and consulting.

If you are "telling" then email, newsletters, intranet page, etc all work.

If you want to "listen" then you need some form of feedback built into the process, the obvious being direct face to face communications.

Consultation relating to H&S is normally done through a safety committee or other similar committee.

Just a few thoughts.

We have 200+ staff who are based away from our HQ. We keep in touch by email etc. We have set up a series of committees containing safety reps that cascade the information down to staff in the various offices/sites. They also send us feedback. We use teleconferencing if we want a face to face meeting without actually travelling.
For basic issuing of procedures/policies we rely on our intranet.

No it's no. I'd say it's more the exception and not the rule to have a committee, due to the changing nature of work environments. Committees exist in large organisations that have a traditional site based activity. That is not the norm nowadays.
