It has been brought to my attention (improved accident reporting!!!) that a small ammount of staff have suffered minor injury whilst working on the beds of our lorries, by bumping their heads on either the crane mast or HIAB etc. I can hear the replies.... well do a RA and get them to wear bump caps / hard hats / highlight the items they are potentially going to impact etc etc
My question is this - is it as simple as you 'will' wear head protection whilst working on the bed of our lorries aper the company policy / RA / SSW.
The reason I ask, is because policing this is nigh on impossible and some will and some won't.....I suppose it all comes down to RA in the long run and protecting one backside etc, but in the real world dealing with a busy, dynamic, driver workforce its not quite that simple.....
Where do we stand legally, if someone falls into the path of an oncoming vehicle for example - if we just say in the RA / SSW - bump hat are provided for your protection and are held in all cabs of every lorry!

In my personal experience it can be as simple or as difficult as you want to make it.
We had a similar scenario and following a revised RA and SOP we implemented head protection. Explained to the Drivers the reasoning behind this and listened to their comments.
Agree it is difficult to police if they are away from your Site - I paid a visit now and again to where they were delivering to monitor compliance and asked our reps to keep a look out too.
