Just a quick one and as usual thanks to all who read and offer advice

So.... HARD HATS.

Ive always been led to believe that hard hats had a life span of three years from dates of manufacture , assuming there is no damage etc to helmet or inner. However one of our suppliers is saying this is an urban myth and so long as Hard Hats have CE mark etc with no damage there is no need to replace it after three years.

Can some either point me in the right direction HSG wise or offer a definitive answer.

Have a good weekend

Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 Guidance on Regulations L25 States the following:

"Section 76 - The key points to note for head protection are:

(d) Throw head protection away after significant impact by a fixed or falling object. Head protection is unfit for use if the outside is deeply scratched, worn or deformed, the harness is damaged or deformed or it is beyond its usable protective life.*

* As a general guide, industrial safety helmets should be replaced three years after manufacture, but always check with the manufacturer."

hope this helps :)

The advice I have been given (probably from another purveyor of urban myth) is that 3 years is the maximum time that suppliers are willing to GUARANTEE a hard hat that has been stored and used properly. After that time they are not sure of what state it might be in. Issues that affect it include things like exposure to UV light which does things to plastics (so a hard hat worn everyday somewhere sunny might have started to degrade after 3 years.)

Check with the manufacturer.

For example, Centurion say you can store it for five years and then still get five years use out of it: http://www.centurionsafe...randCareInformation.pdf:

"The helmet can be stored in its original transport cartons at storage temperature (0ºC to +
30ºC) in the dark, for up to 5 years from date of manufacture (without effecting the ‘in-use’
lifetime)."

"The helmet has an in-use life of up to 5 years from the date of issue to the user (ie. removal
from storage). It is recommended that after 5 years use the helmet is destroyed. Excessive
wear & tear and use in extreme environments can considerably reduce the life span of the
product."

Three years from manufacture as a blanket rule is a myth.

I've even had someone tell me that 3 years is "the law" - which it clearly isn't.

My hard hat also has a recommended life of 5 years from issue.
