For about 24 hours until sometime late yesterday evening I could not access the discussion forums and kept getting a white page with "not available" or similar in bold text. Other parts of the IOSH website remained accessible. From a look through recent threads it seems that some people were able to post responses yesterday. Did anyone else have problems accessing the discussion forums yesterday? If not, this suggests some sort of problem affecting information provided through my broadband system, possibly linked to a free virus checker offered by my phone & broadband supplier. However, if others did experience a similar problem, hopefully someone at IOSH HQ may be able to explain why.

I think you can rule out problems with your broadband Graham. I experienced the same.

There was an un-planned outage running from about 17:10 on the 20th February to about 09:30 on the 21st.

Moderator 2 Thank you for confirming that an outage, whatever that is, occurred. If an outage afflicts the discussion forums in future and seems likely to continue for some time, perhaps it would be possible for the IOSH website home page to include a brief message to advise aspiring forum users. Among other things such a message might help assuage the withdrawal symptoms likely to be experienced by forum addicts/devotees! :-)

I wondered what happened too, As I could access the home page I thought it had been something I posted. Perhaps outage means, IT dept went out and it crashed :o) well it is Friday.

Outage is fairly commonly used in relation to electricity and networks. See Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outage I am sure the webteam would make an announcement if the main pages were available, if it occurred during the working day and was likely to be extensive. This occurred at night. I was able to login again at 9.30 in the morning.

Moderator 2 Thank you again. As a cynical late fiftysomething I suspect that outage has become a popular neutral term for what is commonly known as a failure, blackout or unexpected shutdown. Anyhow, for those of us who weren't familiar with outage, it's now a new expression to sprinkle in our conversations, etc. Also, perhaps some of us might wish to talk about innages as the opposites of outages! :-) On a more serious note, I made my suggestion about anouncements regarding future outages because despite using my usual link I tried on a number of occasions throughout yesterday to access the discussion forum without success. After finding that the rest of the IOSH website remained accessible I tried clicking on "Discussion forums" at the top of the home page, but this also resulted in a stark "Not available" page. Therefore, I had a look around the website for an announcement but couldn't find one. As a result I gave up looking until late evening after returning from a lecture.

"Service unavailable" showed on Wednesday evening as well as last night. The web service provision is appalling. When are we going to get rid of them? Jon
