Hi All Not being too up on power presses, I was hoping some informed people can shed some light on something. I have been looking at the regs and guidance but didn't see (at the moment anyway) anything about using "chocks" as a safety device should the press come down during tool change over or maintenance work. Is this a legal requirement or best practice, or both? Any help would be good. Thanks Ken

Hello Ken I spent a long timer as a power press setter in the late 80's and early 90's. I worked on presses from 20 tonnes up to 1000 tonnes. The first thing to say is that all maintenance work was carried out on pressess that were isolated and locked off. All of the large presses (100 - 1000 tonnes) were fitted with an inch control fro the press ram that was used for all setting operations. In addition the use of chocks that were higher than the die set shut height were compulsory. All inch controls were positioned in such a way as to give the setting crew full visibility of all parts of the press bed. For smaller presses (20 - 75 tonnes), the newer one were fitted with inch controls,, but on some of the older ones the ram had to be raised and lowered by the use of a bar in the flywheel with the engine switched off. As I said this was about 20 - 30 years ago , but those are my recollections
