Does anyone have examples or know of cases when its been made a requirement for a business who out source Health & Safety to a consultant that they use a consultant who's registered on OSCHR? I'm trying to ascertain if this requirement has been made by insurers, part of a tender process or in other circumstances. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Martin

Hi Martin,
last year we went to Pre-Start H & S Meeting with the Principal Contractor, who is a member of the UKCG, they stated that all H & S Advisors/Managers had to be on the register. As an employee it was a tooth pulling exercise to explain to the site team this is only for consultants and not employed H & S Advisors.
So in answer to your question in this particular case it is the PC's policy and it is written into their Sub-Contractor minimum standards guidance.
If you need more info PM me.
Regards
Clive

HSE recommend the register as a place to look for H&S consultants but they do not REQUIRE.
Why do PCs think they can require?
I was on the register at first but did not renew. All I was getting was people trying to sell me advertising.

Spot on Clive.
Optional to be on the OSHCR for anyone who meets the eligibility criteria and pays the money.
Certainly not mandatory for all SHE practitioners to join.
Benefits for/reasons against are being debated in the members area on here.

clive - Thanks for that. Its been mentioned that some contractors had stipulated that any consultants used on jobs are on the OSHCR
Firesafety101 - I'm trying to ascertain if anyone (insurers or contractors) have made being OSHCR a requirement for them
damelcfc - I'll have a look in the members area and see if there's anything in there that can help

Martin,
No problem.
What are you going to do with the information? Is it mere curiosity or are you weighing up the pro's and con's of membership?

Clive,
I'm writing an article and during my research I've noticed that some Insurance companies are making it a requirement that H&S Consultants used are registered with OSHCR and I'm just looking to findout if any members on here are aware of this and if anyone else has made OSHCR a requirement.

Very interesting indeed Martin.
I'm sure a lot of OSHCR subscribers would welcome this but agree would they be aware of the Insurers moves on this front....

We were removed from an 'approved supplier' list because the client organisation said that we weren't satisfying the legal requirement to have a source of competent H&S advice unless we could specify an individual who was on OSHCR.
We don't have such an individual, and we weren't going to employ a consultant who was on OSHCR just to satisfy this one client tick-box, so we got kicked off the list.
I don't know where the client in question got this notion, we haven't seen it from anyone else.

During my research I have come across this wording from an insurer;
For the purposes of the above your appointed person(s) could be a director, partner, employee and/or external source of expertise. HSE guidance explains there are significant benefits from making the appointment from within the company. However, if you do wish to appoint an external consultants please ensure they are registered on the HSE’s OSHCR Register of Consultants (see www.oshcr.org).
