Terry
I was made redundant in December after 8 years as a safety advisor. I was very worried about being made redundant. I was terrified that jobs would be hard to get, how long would the money last for, would I lose my house! etc. As I got stuck in - and I used all my remaining time at work to network, speak to contacts, follow leads etc. Trust me there is life after.....One door closes and another opens. Take some time to evaluate your experience and write a good CV and begin to send it to all the good agencies; they will phone and put you on an active list. I was asked for additional information like projects I worked on and values as well as my views on behavioural safety initiatives and key achievements; so I wrote these things down as an appendix to my CV. I used CV library, Total Jobs and Jobsite as well as SHP. You will also benefit from Linkedin for job search. I have now found another job and found that it was probably about time for me to take a step up, and I am now a manager. Good luck and I'm sure things will work out. Also dont rule out contract work - I have an ex-colleague who worked contracts for a good few years; it depends on your status of course but worth considering.

Had a letter from the CEO, yesterday, I am getting a bonus of £900 for reaching my Targets for 2012, and being the best manufacturing site for H & S within the group, but we are still closing the end of May 13

Redundancy is not fun, but you still have 2 months to find another job. If you do find work quickly you can just pocket the redundancy money. So if you are the lucky type it could all work out well.
Keep looking on the bright side (and the agencies)

terry, I was made redundant in 2006. I'd been a manager in a paint co. and latterly also a safety manager. Having worked with the co. for 30 years the redundancy was very generous, and being over 51 my pension kicked in (though not enough to live on) so I had time to think what to do next.
Anyway, although I'd been a safety manager I had no recognised qual (other than my science degree) so I decided to take and sit the NEBOSH gen cert. That took months but I was flush with money then, so there was no hurry. I found the course not difficult so decided I would go the self-employed route and registered my business. With the spare time I had I created a website for the business.
By April 2007 I had my NEBOSH, the business was set up with mr taxman, and so I sent a lot of letters out to local businesses. By June I had regular work 3 days a week and (apart from 2009) I have mostly had 3 days work regularly which meant a healthy bank account.
My circumstances at point of redunancy might be different from yours but I'm just showing that the trsition to the self-employed route can be done. I also live in a large industrial city which means there are always enquiries looking for consultants. Most of my work now comes via people enquiring via Google, and I am able to be choosy.
