Could someone please confirm if I have this right?

The Exposure Limit Value of 87dBA is:

"The daily or weekly personal noise exposure of 87dBA (averaged over 8 hours or 8 days) is the maximum sound exposure permitted at the ear when wearing hearing protection"

For me this could still damage hearing!

Any comments please?

Yes - but it's not enough just to be under the maximum, you also have to do whatever is reasonably practicable to get further below it.
