Hi there
I am hoping to get some feedback on a predicament. I am just completing BSc in Construction Project Management, which partially involved 3 years studying Construction health and safety. I am in the process of undertaking ‘Site Management Safety Training Scheme,’ a 5 week course and have enrolled on NEBOSH general cert and Construction cert that starts in May.
I am receiving conflicting recommendations concerning the validity of undertaking a NEBOSH cert when I would have a construction degree. The conflicting recommendations are from people who don’t really have the time expand. One view is that I by-pass NEBOSH and register as a grad member with IOSH and the other view is do the NEBOSH because that is what employers are specifying. Thanks in advance. Any comments?

Hi Mac,

I don't see your degree on the IOSH list for direct Grad entry at: http://www.iosh.co.uk/me....aspx#GraduateMembership

There may be modules of your degree that would equate to the NGC which would qualify you for Tech entry, but if you have no experience to back it up it may be problematic for IOSH. Probably best to phone IOSH membership about that bit.

Check out the job adverts for what you plan to be employed in, many will state 'NEBOSH' qualifications as they are recognised by the people writing the adverts. Other qualifications exist but may not get you through a CV or application sift.

SMSTS is available as a 5 day course from many suppliers, who are you doing it with over 5 weeks?

As an illustration, I have the NGC and Diploma but have just done the Fire Certificate and may go on to do the Construction Cert for visibility.

Good luck with wherever it takes you,

Rgds,
S

Hi,

"I am receiving conflicting recommendations concerning the validity of undertaking a NEBOSH cert when I would have a construction degree"

You will find a lot of construction professionals with civil degrees and construction management degrees, will have or deemed desirable to have the NEBOSH construction Cert.

For example, I hold a Civil Engineering degree, and like you there was a lot health and safety within the course but that doesn't automatically give me any health and safety qualification or the requirement to meet GRAD IOSH, I have had to carry out further learning.

Mac Muggins,

I think you have partly answered your question which comes down to the quality of the learning journey rather than the qualification.

If you have already undertaken much of the syllabus within the NEBOSH Certificate and it is Grad Membership that you are after, then this qualification is not for you, however if you do require the NEBOSH Certificate qualification, there is the option (unless I am wrong) of just sitting the exam.

There is no harm in having the NEBOSH General on your CV regardless of your degree qualification. It's widely recognised and employers regard it highly.

I would advise against sitting the exam without completing a course though, as suggested in the previous post. NEBOSH is quite specific and without the correct tuition, guidance and exam technique it would be difficult to pass.
