Morning,
I'm looking for some advice...
I'm currently working as a HSEQ Manager in Construction. I'm due to be going on Maternity Leave in July/August and I need to work out how to cover my job while I’m off for 9-12 months.
I work part time, so I think I’m going to struggle to find a Qualified H&S Person for just 2-3 days a week. I was looking at going down the Consultant route, but at around £300 a day I don't think this would work with my Directors. Alternatively I'm thinking using a Consultant just for site visits, and then find a good H&S Administrator for 2-3 days a week. We have a couple of people with Nebosh Certs in the company for extra back up.
Has anyone had to find this type of cover before? Or do you have any recommendations for finding people? I'll have a look on OSHCR if we go down the consultant route.
Thanks,
Maddie

I think you should advertise and see what you get (be honest in the advert). You may be surprised, struggling consultants may be willing to be employed half the week and consult the remaining time while getting themselves through a low patch. There are a lot of desperate people out there. You have nothing to lose by placing an advert and see who applies.
You could also help yourself and say what area (place) you are in on here.

Thanks Chris42.
I might give that a go rather than use an agency.
I'm based in High Wycombe, but they may be able to work out of our Wolverhampton office.

I think chris has a point - equally most consultants will drop thier daily rate when there is a long term assignment in the offing as the high daily rate in some way covers the potential irregular work. Would suggest however that you try and ensure your cover is able to do some handover days with you - and whilst your employer might find that hard to swallow financially (two lots of money for one job) it really is going to make a difference for the incumbant and their work.
Why not as a first place to look ask at your local IOSH branch? I know at mine lots of the consultants attend the meetings and always good to chat with them and see if any would be willing to cover you?
Good luck! and with junior!!

Hi Blodwyn,
I'm planning for the cover starting about 4 weeks before i leave (if junior all goes to plan!), so that would give me 8+ handover days. So hopefully enough time.
I'll find out about my local branch. I think we are Chiltern as based in High Wycombe, but I live in Milton Keynes so i may try out my local one too (based in Luton I think).
I'd pretty much ruled out Consultants based on the price, but perhaps i need to look more into it.
Thanks very much

WHen I used to work for a consultancy not too far from High Wycombe about 10yrs ago, our charge out rate was £500 / day then.
So the comments about your company not willing to pay £300 / day is pretty bad in my view. Is the construction industry so badly paid?
£300 day = £37.50 hr (8hr day) - factor in travel costs etc, can't see many serious consultants / consultancy businesses going for that.
I got charged £65/hr for a call out to a plumber a few months back.
Shocking

mmmmm
£300 per day x 3 days per week =£900 per week x 4.3 weeks /mth = £3,870 per month x 10 months = £38,700
Then compare that to either the IOSH survey or other recent discussions on here and that is more than a lot get and for only working 10 months.
I'm Grad IOSH with NEBOSH DIP, some experience as Safety Manager, but made redundant. I applied for job which I suspect may only pay half that amount (possibly less) and have the interview for it next week. As I have to go over the Severn Bridge, then take fuel and tolls out of that amount which will be around £4.5k.
So yes I do think there will be interest.
Is it too late to train as a plumber?

Thanks Chris.
I'm hoping that if anyone is interested (or knows anyone who might be) they will PM me.
