So it is obviously a requirement to have double rails with toe boards. But I have noticed several contractors using one rail to protect falls from gable end without toe boards and sometimes without a standard returning to the ground to secure the rail i.e its just secured to the top of the scaffold. In some cases it may not be possible to put a standard returning down the side. Whats other peoples experiences with gable end protection ?

As you correctly stated the WAH 2005 A minimum of 2 guardrails and a toe-board on all working platforms. If you are talking about an access (still working whether loaded or not) it is wrong, If you are trying to describe edge protection which runs parallel to the roof line of gables, it is still wrong. On a separate tangent all edge [protection should be designed due to the lateral forces placed on it, even class A edge protection (effectively the weakest) needs designing or as BS EN 13374 puts it, confirming by design.
