We have a volunteer cleaner working evenings at the local community centre.
Does anyone have a fairly generic risk assessment template for this activity that they would be kind enough to share?

I would be careful about using the HSE guide suggested when considering chemical exposure. Cleaners can use a wide range of different chemicals and the suggestion that rubber gloves can be used for them all could result in inadequate control of exposure. I would suggest that you establish exactly what chemicals that cleaner will be using, then refer to one of the major glove manufacturers' glove selection charts to ensure that you have the appropriate glove for each of these chemicals. Just stating 'rubber gloves' could result in inappropriate gloves being provided. You will also need to ensure that the cleaner understands how to use the gloves (i.e. the procedures for donning and removal) as incorrect use can easily result in skin contamination with the very chemicals the gloves are supposed to be protecting against.

Agree with Chris in that you need to understand what cleaning materials are being used as you may overspec the glove requirements which causes other issues. Breakthrough times can be very different where several substances are used and it is sometimes difficult to get a particular glove to cover all of them.
The use of generic COSHH assessments is good but only where appropriate as you need to ensure that the substance(s) are being used in the same way wherever you are applying the assessment. Working in a large public sector organisation over a number of sites we have an electronic assessment system which has a small number of generic assessments for a particular site but this was implemented only after checking that the practices used were the same.
