We are a national medium size interior fit-out company. We've just swapped insurance providers and our new provider is requesting that we get written "evidence" from any contractor who is to carry out hot work, that they have Public Liability cover in place for £10m and that that cover specifically includes cover for Hot Works. This is not just a Insurance Cert or a letter from the Broker, this will need to be a letter from the Insurance Co. stating that this cover is in place. We do check the insurance of our subbies but not to this level. I can see this generating a massive amount of work to keep on top of all our subbies. Is anyone else being asked for this level of Insurance checking ???? Thanks Andy

Fiesta, Unlike Employers' Liability insurance where there is a Certificate required by law there is no such requirement for Public Liability. The insured simply gets a policy - and sometimes this is kept by the broker. It is not unheard of for insurers to: a) Stipulate levels of insurance cover that you must require any/all sub-contractors to have in place and b) For there to be a requirement that the sub-contractor obtains from their insurer written confirmation of both cover and Limit of Indemnity. Different insurers have different approaches! Phil.

Most insurance brokers should be able to provide from the insurer a supplementary list of conditions attached to the policy. We have ourselves a list from our insurers as it doesn't cover work on airports (runway) etc... Can't see why it will create much more work, a simple request with your subcontractors to provide it in addition, and then to provide going forward when they send the renewal to you yearly.
