Company Name including the phrase "health and safety"

Hi all
I tried to register a ltd company which included the above phrase in the name ,I received an email from the registering company saying Companies House said I require permission from the HSE to use health and safety in the name.
I am not intending to start trading yet but the company name I want to use is available and for the amount it costs even if I never start up its less than £40 lost.
Has anyone met the same obstacle and would like to share with me what I need to do ?
Thank you
Mark

Don't believe everything that third parties say: ask to see the actual evidence from HSE and wait for the excuses. There are loads of registered business with health and safety in their title.

There are some rules regarding the naming of a company. If it sounds similar to another organisation you will be prevented from using it. Why don't you speak to the HSE, if they have no objections get it in writing and use it.

It's little to do with the HSE, it's governed by assorted legislation including The Company and Business Names (Miscellaneous Provisions) Regulations 2009 (SI2009/1085) and sections 53-55 and 1197-8 of the Companies Act 2006. Potentially you get hit by both - falling foul of both the 'business pre-eminence' restricions and teh ones against implying a connection with government or a relevant body.
See http://www.companieshous...k/about/gbhtml/gp1.shtml and particularly chapters 6 and 7 and Annexes A and B.
If you want 'health and safety' in the title, as far as I can see there's no absolute prohibition, but you do need the permission of HSE, and the Secretary of State, and need to file a load of extra paperwork. A company doing the registration for you isn't going to do all that for 40 quid. You could do it yourself, or pay a lawyer on an hourly rate.
For what it's worth, when I formed my company I didn't have any restricted words in the name, but I paid a lawyer (and an accountant) anyway, in order to avoid being stuck with the default terms of incorporation embedded in statute.

You learn something new everyday from this forum.......
Also, when mythbusters has been discussed recently there has been a lot of comment about the HSE thinking they 'own' the phrase 'health and safety' ..................Well it seems they do!!!! :)

Mark - how about just turning the health and safety round.
With future legislation implementing EC Directives being "copy out" may well find ourselves using "safety and health" becoming the norm.
