I work at a distribution centre, I am one of the transport H&S rep's. All the inside of the warehouse is fire alarmed as you would expect. However when the fire alarm goes off inside it can not be heard outside, this is due to vehicle movements. I have asked about having an alarm fitted outside but I have been told that because we have houses 300mtrs away this is not possible due to noise abatement. The company say they are fulfilling the legal requirements with alarms just on the inside. They are suggesting that a call over the site radio to the shunters in the yard for them to tell all other people in the area to evacuate the area. Could someone please advice as to what if anything I can suggest to help, I have asked for a lower decibel alarm just to try to give warning or the appointment of a fire warden.

Flashing red beacon placed over a worded sign adjacent to main doorways? - No noise disturbance to neighbours

At my last place we utilised the shunters to alert other drivers who were outside of the main building. Never had a problem- the local FRS were quite happy with our arrangements. A lower decibel alarm wouldn't help- off the top of my head I can't remember how many db is recommended above the ambient noise. Shunters and other tractor units would mean it would have to be a VERY loud alarm. Take into consideration wind direction and... I take it that the shunters have the yellow warning lights on top? One thing I have seen in the past is the Hawaii Five-0 type of red lights that the shunters use when a fire alarm goes off. No yellow lights flashing - just the red. Site rules, communication, training & drills is the key. Drivers that are in their tractor units can see the red lights- no need for the shunter to get out of his cab. If you have sleepers... well that's another problem. Are they any? Andy

My other half works at a huge producers and distributers of milk ...mentioning no names . Here is what they have in place: Hi, Our shunters are radio'd as suggested The shunters are then responsible for stopping all movement of vehicles in the area.... And marshalling with security & fire Marshall's until threat either cleared or the fire ... will see if I can find the full procedure and how it is worded.....

Hi to all, Thank you for the replies some helpful information, I had thought of asking to have the shunters trained as fire marshals, the red lights on the tugs too. We don't have anyone sleeping in the units over night, it's a site policy Thanks again.
