All, I have an issue with a new task. The task is to remove a reel of laminate weighing approx 200kg and insert a mandrel bar that weighs approx 34kg. I have a solution for lifting the laminate however I'm struggling to find a solution for the removal and insertion of the mandrel bar into the reel of laminate. The task involves one operator. Any advice appreciated!

Not an easy issue to quantify, the phrase "where reasonably practical" springs to mind. We perform numerous 1 person manual handling tasks where the weight of the item maybe would be easier to undertake with 2 persons, but a variety of restrictions preclude this from happening. We actually perform virtually the self same task as you have described and in our case, following an assessment of the potential risks, we changed the whole process to ensure the mandrill was inserted in to the reel of product by 2 persons before the reel was 'mounted' mechanically on to the machine. Maybe not the answer you were looking for but if the process can be re-designed "where reasonably practical" then you should at least look at this option.

Iwould envisage such tasks as involving forklifts ("remove a reel of laminate") with attachments and perhaps other fixed or mobile lifting equipment.

Hi Scott, Have a look at the following links - there may provide a solution to your problem at a cost. http://www.reel-shaft-ha...&id=17&Itemid=71 http://www.engliftsystem...-and-shaft-handling.html Phil W

Agree with Phil's second link. Have used them in the past. Hand operated item, like a pallet handler with a fixture that clamps on to the shaft, did the job.
