Looking for some blunt advice if possible?

I am keen to explore the offshore or similar “active” outdoor work in anyway anywhere, but have been told it is a difficult one to get your foot in the door. I would like to do some HS&E work and have summarized my qualifications that I feel might be relevant to the works. Simply - DO I HAVE A CHACNE or do I need different qualifications and experience as some sort of entry position first?

Industrial Rope Access Technician (IRATA Level 1)
Advanced First Aid
MSc Emergency Planning & Disaster Management
RTITB Registered Instructor – Various Forklifts & Lorry Mounted Crane
Drager Escape Breathing Apparatus Trainer and Maintainer

9 years experience in various roles as training and HS&E - logistics, highways, construction, waste and marine. I have also worked on a major cross-country gas pipeline for 12 months.

To reiterate what nickygee says - look at getting into a Project HSE Advisor role, get a feel, get the exposure (where I was/am, you still did stints offshore) and work from there. Plenty of Project roles up here if you want to PM me (I'm not an agent, just someone who's leaving a role and looking to backfill!)

You might get in as rope access technician to do rig inspections and then transfer to an HSE role.

I am in a similar position to the original poster -

I am CMIOSH status having gone down the Diploma route.

Before retraining as a HS practitioner I spent over 20 years in the merchant navy and offshore in the north sea as an able bodied seaman (AB) in which time I served on semi subs, standby vessels and dive support vessels.

I have been trying for the last 3 months to acquire any sort of position offshore including my previous role (AB) to restart my offshore career, but unfortunately with no success apart from a few run a rounds from agencies based in Aberdeen that did not materialise.

I currently hold a number of offshore related qualifications along with HS qualifications-
• OPITO Approved BOSIET (EURO)
• Able Bodies Seaman (AB) Certificate
• MIST completed 4th June
• OGUK offshore medical (expiry date 6th June 2015)
• Helseerklaering / Certificate of medical fitness Norwegian offshore sector

• Adult Teaching: Preparing to Teach the Lifelong Learning Sector, Level 3
• NUCO First Aid at Work Instructor/Assessor, HSE-Approved
• NEBOSH Fire Safety Management Certificate
• NEBOSH Diploma
• Manual Handling Training Instructor
• NEBOSH General Certificate
• Training in Advanced fire fighting National Sea Training Centre
• Risk Assessment Course, British Safety
• CPSC Certificate in Proficiency in Survival Craft

I have several colleagues who currently work offshore so I am still aware of the job market and route I want to take which is to ultimately again a safety coach’s or similar HS related role on any offshore installation or vessel. But first I must get a restart which I am finding to be impossible at the moment.
Any assistance from anybody regarding my quest would be most welcome.
