90/270/EEC has min. requirements for the adjustability of chairs.
In L26 (HSE's Guidance Document for the DSE reg) the schedule on page 35 under e) states “...The seat back shall be adjustable in both height and tilt...”
Appendix 1 of the guidance makes reference to EN1335 on page 38 and page 41 under section 23 makes a more detailed statement on work chairs “.... The Schedule requires the seat to be adjustable in height (i.e. relative to the ground) and the seat back to be adjustable in height (also relative to the ground) and tilt. Provided the chair design meets these requirements and allows the user to achieve a comfortable posture, it is not necessary for the height or tilt of the seat back to be adjustable independently of the seat. Automatic backrest adjustments are acceptable if they provide adequate back support.
EN1335 outlines types A, B and C. So the question is do all EN1335 chairs comply with DSE reg requirements?

The regulations indicate how suitable and sufficient assessment of risks to users of chairs and other furniture should take differences of users into account.
So, any chairs, including those you refer to, comply with DSE reg requirements to the extent that they are adapted to the heights, weights, measurements of users 'limbs and spines, as well as to specific tasks they perform and to ambient lighting.
If you want an explanatory guide to the balance required, read the well-written research compiled by a safety ergonomist who influenced the drafting of the DSE Regs, S Pheasant in Bodyspace, 1996 or the posthumous edition with C Haslegrave, 2003.
