Hi All,
Wondering if anyone could provide any advice.
I am arriving in Perth 1st Dec 2013, with a working holiday visa. I am hoping to get some temporary H&S administrator jobs, to gain some experience in new industries.
My H&S background is in retail and would love to be in a more fast pace and high risk industry!Could anyone recommend any courses? Thanks, Jane

Jane,
Not too sure about how much experience you will get, but in terms of training contact the Safety Institute of Australia (www.sia.org.au) who have a branch in Western Australia. They will be able to help you with your request.

I would think it may be quite difficult to gain OH&S related experience in a high risk industry with a retail background alone. One area that may be worth exploring is that Australian OH&S legislation requires workers to possess licences for 29 areas of work activity identified as high-risk work. The training agencies that are authorized to train workers to do this work are required to register as RTO's - Registered Training Agencies. The trainers, as of July 1, 2013 that instruct for the RTO's must complete a five day trainer course. In turn, the assessors that evaluate the students also must have certain backgrounds. While it isn't exactly a full-time temporary position as a safety manager for an oil & gas installation, it MAY give you the opportunity to gain valuable experience and exposure to related industries that are within the high-risk realm that you wish to move in to...
Hope this helps.
