Hi All
Looking for the best ways to investigate WBV in one of the excavators on the construction site where I work. Do I ask the sub-contractor to call out the hire company to confirm the vibration level, suspend work in the machine until I have received all the relevant information, employee job rotation although this can be difficult as only competent persons can drive these machines. My thoughts would to call the hire company to see if my thoughts are correct and to prevent the driver being exposed to WBV un necessarily.

Would be gutsy to suspend work until you had the information your after.
Do you consider it to be serious and iminent danger that the driver will be exposed to something (the WBV) that may be too big a 'risk' to take that warrants this level of intervention?
Do you consider WBV so serious a matter that any exposure is detrimental and the activity should cease?
Are the drivers complaining/not getting breaks/working excessive hours/the excavator a real bone shacker of a beast/what media are you excavating? - what are your existing control measures?
Identify whats got you spooked and try and nail it whilst you absolutely should ask for available data or take measurements yourself, stopping the job may be a bit OTT based on your just not knowing every crumb of detail - thats life sometimes - we can't always stop until we are in possesion of all the facts - unless you can expand a bit more I'd not stop the job.
Excavator does not = WBV = OMG Panic

I was just considering my options as I never panic I always think through my actions objectively I was consulted by one of the excavator drivers about vibration in his machine and told him I would get back to him after discussing this matter with his supervisor and the hire company. I would not go done the route of suspending working activities unless I had grave concerns for the well being of the driver however if anyone consults to me on site about their concerns I will make sure it will be properly investigated.

WBV is a hard thing to measure even with todays technology especially when you note that its the persons dose that U are measuring and NOT the kits vibrations!
After dealing with such areas over many years along side the HSE in many situations I would take note of damelcfc's advice and let the job run on until such time as U have sufficient information noting again that to obtain suitable and sufficient data is hard and WBV is not a case of SID in all but the most unusual cases as getting knocked over is probably the greatest risk in that area
U may need to undertake the measuring yourself/your specialist because if your employees are not individually measurered U may still be at risk NB: a lot of drivers are self employed these days so that is another factor to consider
I would contact your local HSE [if that is possible nowerdays] with a generalist Q? without giving away too musc detail e.g. company name; for support if they are willing & able to give it or a specialist

No worries Derek - just letting you know why I would not go down one of the routes suggested in your OP - not knowing all the facts in this matter is not reason enough in itself IMO to intervene until you do
