Just a quick question
Accident happened on site with a sub-contractor on a client site. Who needs top complete the accident book? Principal contractor? Sub-contractor? Client? All?
Many thanks

I would have thought that the employer of IP should report the accident with a copy of the RIDDOR report or at least the reference number to be given to the Principal Contractor as reference for their own files.

Table 1 in Guidance 2 of RIDDOR states for injuries of an employee at work, the responsible person in the persons employer.
However, if I was the site owner I would also want a record, whether it is a legal requirment or not.

Great stuff! and confirmed my understanding. My current situation is as follows:
Incident happened on site involving a sub-contractors operative. I am of the understanding that they would complete the accident book entry. I have requested a copy of this entry and a copy of their accident investigation. I will then complete a report on the back of this with any further recommendations and questions if desired.
I am being asked by the client to complete the accident investigation? I am also being asked to complete an accident book entry? I do not agree to these further measures and feel they are being a tad overzealous.
Further thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Lisa. who are you working for? If the client, then do as they ask. They may want an independent check on the accident investigation to see that nothing is swept under the carpet. The client will also want any reports, accident entries in case there is litigation and they will be drawn in (as they have money). If it is the Principal contractor, then do what they want, but you have to keep the client sweet as well.
My view is that the client should be involved in the accident investigation if it happened on their property.

hang on, hang on.
Question is about accident book.
Recording of accidents in an ACCIDENT BOOK is required under the Social Security (Claims and Payments) Regulations 1979 - regulation 25: Social Security (Claims and Payments) Regulations.
So clear answer - EMPLOYER.
Now, that doesn't stop other parties recording it as well, but then it is obviously for other reasons than those of social security :)
If it's reportable under RIDDOR that's already been answered.
And of course we should all investigate accidents - but that's not what the question asked.

The employer only has to provide the book, it is up to the injured person to fill it out or someone acting on their behalf.

Missed a bit
Also do an investigation if it has been filled out.
