Asbestos Awareness Training & Refresher Training

I have been asked whether or not Asbestos Awareness Training & Refresher Training MUST be delivered by a UKATA registered/accredited company?
Or can we bring this course and the subsequent refresher course in house and be delivered by one of our in house Health & Safety Professionals (Tech IOSH/CMIOSH with relevant construction & experience with dealing with asbestos).
I have checked the regs and the ACOP and all i can find is that the course must comply with the requirements of the regulsations and cover the relevant topics, and that the course must be delivered by an experienced person.
Can anyone clarify the above.
thanks in advance.

It need not be UKATA, and can be delivered as you suggest. Unfortunately, some major contractors seem to be insisting on UKATA?

I believe you'll find the regs actually say you SHOULDN'T have the same training year on year and the second year should be specific to the type of work you do.
Like Ron says though, it depends on the requirement of your client/clients.
If they insist on UKATA, if you want the work, UKATA it is.

Hi Allan
We have been carrying out internal training on all our guys (Civil Eng) but now the water board (over half our work) have insisted on UKATA accreditation.
So, although I am happy with our course, specific, tailored, we now have to send them all externally to satisfy the client, starting next week, 1/2 day course.
Ah well.

Just reflecting on all the other threads here discussing the utter nonsense on the HSE "Myth buster" pages.
This is perhaps a situation where the HSE could do some good by busting mythpractice (excuse the lisp),
