When I took over the position of Health and Safety Advisor, the wearing of PPE in the factory seemed to me to be optional! I have held toolbox talks, one to one sessions, posted mandatory notices, and now carry out weekly PPE audits which go to the directors. Still I am not reaching 100% compliance. Is the only solution to enforce the company rules by disciplinary action? I would be interested in members thoughts. I am sure it is an old subject, but I am a new member.

Hi Blue, I had a similar problem where I work. Safety Glasses, Boots and Hearing protection are mandatory in our working area's.
Some staff were diligent and wore it without issue, others were not. So like you I introduced a simple weekly audit for PPE, this wasn't just to check they were wearing it but also to check the condition of it, especially boots!
Those who failed were given a verbal warning by me, this warning, although not official or recorded on their file, was recorded in our EHS Reporting system, and their manager made aware.
If however, they are caught again without the correct PPE, it is then passed to their manager, where the next warning issued is an official one.
This happened on 3 occasions, the message now appears to be getting through. Another thing you can do is publish the results of your audit, leave their names off if you wish, but this way you can show the staff you are conducting audits, and that those who failed the audit were reported and appropriate action taken.

Seems to be a common problem in some industries we have resorted to naming and shaming in monthly ehs reports....
