I am considering undertaking a Distance Learning Degree (at 48 am I mad). Can any recommend the best route based on experience, thanks

Your not mad I have undertaken my diploma distant leading waiting on my Unit D result on the subject of distant learning which I also undertook your own your own support is not great however if you give it you full commitment you will be fine if everything goes well done mine in 13 months

I have just completed a level 5 diploma in health and safety and it was good for me, the tutor support was great and i completed in 8 months.

Hi Kev, I did that at 48 only 49 now. I did it online with RRC ( Rapid Response Courses ) based in Wimbledon. NEBOSH General & Environmental certs , also did the Occ Health & Wellbeing yet to complete. Work at your own pace, they tend to use pdf's so can save to laptop and work offline which is great for when not online too.

Your age is no barrier at all. Having been a NEBOSH tutor for years I would say though that face to face is best. Lots of people seem to want to do DL as it seems "easier" - but it isnt. You still have to put the hours in. If you can comit to this, then go for it. Go for a training provider that gives lots of support. Hope this helps.

I returned to learning aged 48 so no you are not mad unless I am too!
The University of Strathclyde do a distance learning Msc program I finished the cert this year and may to the dip next. It is hard work, but then all worthwhile things are!
Materials are good as is tutor support, it is possible you have missed this years intake but if that is how you want to go give the team a call they may fit you in, each year is £3K so not a cheap option, but then fee's are high everywhere!

Hi Kev, I wish you luck in your studies. I completed a BAppSc via distance learning at the age of 42 and it took a lot of hard work. The key is to use the support systems from the college and your family/friends to keep you motivated. At 51 I am actually about to enrol in the NEBOSH Nat Dip as a DL student. (Astutis is currently offering this for £1200)

I did an H&S MSc with Loughborough via distance learning which was very good.
I have just finished Env MSc with Bath via distance learning, it was really good.
Takes a bit of discipline.
PS - I'm 52!

As others have said, be disciplined. Set yourself a realistic study planner: organising, studying, note taking, research (if required), preparing chapter / section summary notes, preparing and submitting assessments (and time to study comments received for future assignments) and of course Home Life!
