Hmm, just read the new RIDDOR regs and was interested in the bit about sling failures during a lift and whether it is reportable. The regs state that you don't have to report failures from lifting accessories, just the load bearing part of any equipment. If I were a betting man I would think that this would lead to less than honest people now not bothering to maintain their lifting accessories as, if they fail and don't injure anyone, then it is not reportable. Am I right in my thoughts or am I just wide of the mark?

This was the case in the "old" RIDDOR also

Have read the 'old' again but it never really specified that slings etc were not reportable, just stated that the load bearing was which, to me as a non-lifting specialist, would have included slings etc; as I am a cynic by nature, I thought I would ask the question. Thanks for the info as it made me go back and read through anyway (which is always a good thing as it makes you re-acquaint yourself with the relevant detail)...

Yeah the new regs spell it out more, you have to read the LOLER definitions and understand what Lifting Equipment is v's Accessory for lifting. RIDDOR Refers to Lifting Equipment so use the definitions in LOLER to make your assessment.

Duh! - now why didn't I think of that? In which case, I retract my question and will go back and sit in the corner wearing the conical hat... Thanks for the info, will go away and read the relevant LOLER detail!
