Following from the recent helicopter incident where 4 people died, we are currently looking to update our emergency response procedure as a result.

One of the issues that i need help with is with regards to Fax machines. In an emergency situation aboard an offshore vessel, it is best practice to have as many forms of communication as possible in case any of them cease to work. I was told though that it was a legal requirement to have a Fax machine aboard an offshore vessel as sending an email to a regulator such as the HSE or DECC can take some time due to their firewalls.

I fully agree that each vessel should have a fax machine but can't find any legislation that states this. Is anybody able to point me in the right direction if this is the case?

Fax relies on the machine being plugged into the wall socket which is connected to the telephone lines. Email is connected exactly the same way. If one line goes down then the other automatically does too.

If you are wanting a fax line set up a line to a mobile port which will be good for both emails and faxes.
