Hi

I'm after some advice.

I'm now in my last year in the Army. I have the NEBOSH gen cert and have just completed the fire safety and awaiting the results and fairly confident I have passed. I have booked in to the Environmental management cert and diploma next year as part of my resettlement. I am also hoping to get on a Construction cert course that my unit may be running early next year.
Over the past few years I have done some H & S work at various units both UK based and overseas in a multi national NATO HQ.
With all the courses I have done and got planned is there anything else I should look at doing in the next year. I am also due out mid august next year and still getting paid till end of October.

Have a look at an auditing course, may come in handy. You are pretty much in the same situation I was 5 - 6 years ago. Looks like you will be fine.

Hi jockey, many organisations also look for accident investigation skills when advertising positions.
Good luck with your new career.

It looks like you will have a very good, broad base to work from. When I am recruiting that is what I look for. An area I know is busy is around construction waste management.

There is a HUGE largely untapped market there for saving companies money! Once you do the environmental diploma see if you can do something specific to construction waste, just a thought!

Gents thanks for all the advice.
As I previously said I'm due out in august . Whilst doing the environmental diploma I am going to try and work with the SHEF dept on base if my boss will allow to get some more experience . Hopefully will be able to get a job as soon as am out. If not then will be trying to get some work placement and see what happens. Will just have to get deep into the study books when the courses cme round to ensure I pass.
But once again thank you all for the good advice.

If you have not already done so, get on linkedin. There are plenty of groups on there for ex-forces etc. Only last week someone in Gods Own County (Notts) was after an ex-serviceman with NGC for a contract just West of Nottingham.

Hi Betta
I'm already on a couple of groups on LinkedIn. But will need to sit down and do a good search name get on more. That job in nottingham would be ideal as I live on the outskirts but not too worry. Will just keep an eye out for similar.

There aren't many jobs out there, I've been looking for over a year.

I am also ex army and TA with 18 years combined service.

I have 5 nebosh certificates and working on another 2 (construction and IEMA foundation), together with a few other certificates and qualifications, but what most recruiters stipulate is 2-5 years experience in a safety role - I don't have that - and I don't see how to get that.

Looks like you are putting a lot of effort into gaining key qualifications and that will serve you well. I think being able demonstrate application of your safety skills will help answer the lack of experience question.

Look at doing a safety improve project - Reduction of Slips and Trips - Work at Height Improvements - create and deliver some toolbox talks - Review and improve current RA in your area etc.

Once you have gone through the process you will be able to talk with clarity and passion on what you delivered, and that resonates.

All said and done future employers want people who can deliver positive change. I look to what people have done as a measure of what they may be able to do for our business.
Regards
Steve

Jockey as others have said you seem to be doing the right things. I did 12yrs Military and 18yrs Fire Rescue Service (FRS). I have recently left FRS having done MSc in H&S, and 2 NEBOSH Certs. I found that there were plenty of jobs on offer and I got a lot of interviews based on my CV. I set my sights at a level that I felt I should be doing, which is equivalent to doing an apprenticeship. I was offered a couple of jobs, one of which I am doing now. I must admit that the money is not great and the hours are long, but every day I am able to put into practice things I have learnt, whilst also learning new skill. Hopefully this will compliment my existing experiences from both the military and FRS and lead to a bright new future.
It is worth speaking to H&S managers in the fields that you are interested in. I approached a number of different companies and spoke to their H&S mangers, they gave me some sound advice as to what I needed to compliment my existing skill.
I wish you good luck with your move from Army.
