Not dissimilar to some serious incidents involving crumbling masonry. Inspect, repair, maintain.

I'm with Ron on this one. From the perspective of the property owner it is mainly about Inspect, Repair, Maintain. There is perhaps a further "duty" which relates to selection of a competent installer. For the installer there is also a duty - in my opinion - to ensure that safe systems of fixing are employed. Thus there needs to be clear guidance for installation teams - whether own employees or subcontractors - to take steps to ascertain that the structure to which sign is being fixed is suitalbe for the weight of the sign being installed. Also questions about design and suitability of sign for the local conditions. A sign suitable for a location in the West Midlands may not be sufficiently robust for a coastal location in the South West. Phil

I couldn’t agree more. As with any number of other aspects of commissioning, owning, managing, equipment, buildings, vehicles, gravestones, trees, roads, lamp posts (even processes) etc etc you should ensure that the installation is ‘fit for purpose’ and that there are sufficient resources (financial, physical, people, knowledge, competency) in place to maintain it in ‘good order’. Absolutely no ‘magic’ involved.
