One for the management system gurus out there. The company that I work for has 9001, 14001 and 18001. As a welding fabrication company, they are looking to install 3834 and drop 9001. Is 3834 a total quality management system that can replace 9001? My understanding is that 3834 could compliment 9001, but not replace it. I would appreciate members opinions. Thanks in advance.

I think your assumption is correct. I was a few years ago now that I last looked at 3834, but I thought you had to have 9001 in order to get 3834, but I could be wrong. I mention this thought as you may want to check if this is so!

Chris I think that 3834 is a welding standard that can run alongside 9001, and indeed compliment 9001. 3834 can operate as a stand alone standard in an organisation where the welding operations are simple, but I don't see anywhere in 3834 that allows for continual improvement, as in 9001. Heaven knows, our organisation needs improvement!!! I am convinced that my Works Director has only listened to the bits that he wanted to hear. Groundhog Day. Thanks for your reply.

To put simply 3834 is specific to welding operations. 9001 is your 'total' quality management system. Surely it is madness to drop this standard as procurement of major companies will not allow you on their books without this standard. Could also affect third party certification as this is a prerequisite.
